Octo hair

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Its a melding of an implosion of ideas all at once, she basically had a life of her own once pencil hit paper, and I was just the manifestation instrument. Basically, she is a bloomer wearing, pink puddle hopping, octo hair blooming dancer.

Inner Lipstick and Corn

Been drawing, hand now achey.

My mom finally allowed me to wear makeup when I was in highschool and I wore a lot. Sometimes, I had so much lip gloss on that later in the day were I to catch a glimpse of myself in something reflective I would see it had dripped to my chin. haha, silly vain teenage years

I had written previously on the topic of envy and jealousy. I thought about it last night when ironically the movie Seven aired on t.v., as envy is one of the “seven deadly sins”.

I started doodling and wondering how I might express that idea in a drawing. Since I am slightly obsessed with duos, a theme that comes back to me over and over, I quickly began to imagine how envy might rear its head up between twins and more than that, conjoined twins who are stuck together for life (in some cases).

I wrote a little story to go with the drawing then thought, the drawing would work better alone, generating some thinking from the viewer.

Patricia Zemanek and a memory and a rak

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Patricia Zemanek stopped by to see Barbie Redux today, what fun, Patricia owns and operates Eclectix gallery over in El Cerrito, she puts on great shows all year, I DON”T know how she does it! (Plus she is raising two children, woot!)She has a great eye for all things low brow, new brow, and pop surreal check out her gallery here:

I had a rough and tumble sleepless night (again), woke up and stayed tired and cranky all day, trying to shake it off, not even the fresh salty ocean breeze stirred my senses much but I did recall a time in my life when I use to drive from San Jose to Santa Cruz periodically to lay out and sunbathe at the beach, read, listen to music and walk the boardwalk. I would often treat myself to a caramel apple, the boardwalk was full of tasty treats but the apples were my fav and in those days I didn’t have a weight problem. Now, the sun is my enemy and I do not lay out at all, but I do love to drive with the hood down on my vehicle if its an overcast day as it was this morning. Speaking of convertibles. Have you seen the new Z4? be still my heart!!

The new z4

Someone stopped by the gallery and left a cd with photographs taken at the Barbie Redux opening. I wish I knew who they were so I could personally thank them for a “random act of kindness”. This is the kind of thing I am compelled to pay forward. If you who gifted me, are reading here, I thank you sincerely.

I discovered this contest online about envy. Its almost too late to submit still it gets me to thinking. First the difference between jealousy and envy is…and secondly, what role does jealousy or envy play in an artist’s life.

Red Ravine

Webster’s defines envy as:
1 : painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage

and jealousy as:
hostile toward a rival or one believed to enjoy an advantage

“painful and hostile” don’t sound like very healthy words, its something I’d like to think about some more and journal. Getting a handle and some clarity on these emotions may serve in a good way.

I’ll take my journal with me to work today and spend some time with these thoughts.

Its suppose to be a comfortable 83 degrees, good thinking weather 😀
