Tanzanian Trunk Sale on Ojai Art Detour
Exclusive! The Studio Artist Tour and the Art Detour will showcase many wonderful artists, but only at OVA arts can you find handcrafted items from Musoma, Tanzania. Come to the Trunk Sale on October 12 from 10-4 and see the new items that the African artisans have designed. Woven trays, bread and cracker baskets, and hand sewn table runners, potholders, purses and bags are just a few of the unique creations you will find.
The baskets are made by a group of elderly women in an environment of rampant disease, extreme poverty, and little clean water. The basketmakers range in age from 65-86 and most are raising their grandchildren. There are young and old in Musoma, but HIV AIDS, Malaria and other diseases from malnutrition have severely diminished the middle age population. Koku Peters who’s in her 70’s recently lost her daughter during childbirth and now must care for the baby and her 3 other grandchildren. Like the others, selling her baskets to Wishworks Intl. is the only income she has.
The fabric items are made by young women in their teens and early twenties In a group called Tupendane. In Musoma there are no readymade clothes, so the women have learned to make shirts, dresses and the items they sell to Wishworks Intl. on old foot treadle machines. This skill allows them to support themselves, since a high school degree is typically out of reach and does not guarantee a job.
OVA arts supports Wishworks Intl. and helps to make a transformative difference to those who struggle for their next meal. Come be a part of this successful program by taking home a bit of Africa. OVA arts is located at 108 N. Signal, Ojai and is open daily from 10-6.
