The Messenger
By Bridgette Guerzon Mills

Bri used encaustic for her altered Barbie submission. See more of her beautiful Encaustic work Bri
Bri writes: “The Messenger was created using plaster and encaustic and oil paints. The waxy surface of encaustics allowed me to create organic texture and add even more texture with scraping and scratching into the surface. Writing was inscribed into her back that reads:
My outstretched hands would trace your scars and transform them into a tree
A living growing tree
Branches of life reaching towards the eclipsed sun
And the branches would turn into limbs of strength and hope
I used real twigs to form part of her skirt. If you look between the branches, you can see the original barbie legs! That is the only part of her that shows her true origins. I enjoyed the process of transforming a plastic doll, normally a symbol of superficiality and fluff, into a creature of substance. An ancient creature that looked like she emerged from the earth.”
